Stephen is a theatre director, cultural producer and a member of the British Council global leadership team

Stephen’s career started in London as an actor and then writer/director. He then moved to Scotland as a theatre director and Festival Producer. Stephen has a track record of running and programming successful arts organisations, events and venues.


He wrote a number of commissions for Bill Kenwright Ltd. and adapted European plays for the English stage, most notably by Nobel prize-winning Dario Fo (“Abducting Diana” published in 1993 re-printed in 1996). Throughout his career, Stephen has always been involved in youth and community Theatre and in 1985 was a founder member of Moving Theatre and in 1988 set up the education team as part of Unicorn Theatre for Children in London’s West End.


Stephen Stenning now leads British Council’s Arts and Society work, a cross-disciplinary portfolio that uses creative, cultural, and innovative approaches to global challenges.
